Driving algorithms for production of literature, lies, letters, or lists as well as collorlary and catalytic movement and intercourse to whatever degree employed (and engaged!), will be, of course, core mathematics, hard, but styled by/built around/informed by pure math, the theoretical, the codec of musicologies, prescribed by and descriptive of grammar, phenomenologically codifying, spandexiconically stretch with the tension of imperfectly functional linguistic morphology. E.G.wiz: combinatorial outcome of text’s tone and rhythm mapped formulaically to music (and then perhaps the music maped to complex emotional cocktail states and/or the music is assigned to/representative of basic, fitting/harmonizing (even if appropriately unpleasantly) activities: from learning, resting, and exploring to eating, masturbating, and fighting. Dreaming by numbers.
Or, far more simply (or complexly-complicatedly, really) and interestingly, the math is no more than a faithful conduit, a porter as innocent as can be (which isn’t totally), not acting on the text or being a bend or fork in the road, far less a mathemagician as conceived above for extreme (success, depth, a tunnel-mining of that vein, whatever). No, merely soley translator of raw undisciplined, unvisioned, purposed language into lit given one or more mappings, methods, and criteria. Have these operations link sequentially or even interactively with increasing input, variables, nuance and possibility and your verging back into alchemistic territory. The simple starts at taking the number of letters in each word, converting to it’s corresponging letter of the alphabet, pooling the letters somehow so the letters in the late teens and early twenties get a fair shake, too, and then lining them up in their original order and seeing what words come out. That Rudimentary kipling. To start at least. Build. See what those yield, and where they lead. It might surprise, and benefit person and project. The transmorphation bi-directional, or at least optional: lang to lit, lit to lang. Clang to clit, clit to clang. Relationship building. Steppy-step up, words keyed to other words by association direct, in-/re-verse, by (up to six) degrees based on meaning or maybe even more esoterically by predominate placement in mouth of pronunciation, even by harshness. Or combos and combinations thereof. Rhythm of whole passage/para—graphed, graded and grouped, then group members—membership defined at the sentence level, maybe?—swap places to see the difference, hear how it sounds, and get more feeling for sounds input in meaning-making. …it fractals toward infinte Jest. A letter triggers a word, v.v., and so on n on n on…trigger happy beaten dead horse…

In an extraction model (trigger larger than bullet hole), formation is selective, and in that way true to life in that much is wasted, missed, lost, flownby: sexy ops drunkenly stumbling by not taken advantage of, efforts are in vain, targets just missed, lady luck out cycling with the chancellor, looking for a lemonade stand to stop at, patronize… and the downward spirals of poverty in a swirling drainage of symmetry just as the upward mobility of affluence does itself every favor in bloom and burgeoning bounty.

Or: does each second tick a strike at the foundation, chipping away tid bit by bit so that the reading is a witnessing of the slow, inevitable degradation of the original text (a defacing disfigurment that is also featuring to a smooth, unfaceted, uninteresting unbroken-in surface).
One, other, omni can be an organizing, a shaping (improvement, a revision, an edit), a creative creating of the text out of the raw material born with (letters, words, bits of disparate floating text) OAR concepts/objects/situations encountered, acquired, suffered, given and machinistically/wildly creatively programmatically parlayed into textual subs/linguistic reps/placeholders/labels/corrals to…wait for it…here it comes…

Web Supplement: User’s Guide
Author Interview
An extension of the book, the Writing Machines Web Supplement began as a place to store, present, and rethink the scholarly apparatus. The site grew to include alternative mappings of the book’s conceptual terrain in a manner specific to the web?s any good technotext should—with additional functionalities unavailable in print. Completing the cycle of remediation, the Supplement gives the user the ability to customize his or her own copy of the book by providing Adobe Acrobat .pdf files for each section, some of which are formatted in “printer’s spreads” that can be printed out, folded, and inserted into the body of the book itself.
From “affordances” to “xml”, the LEXICON is a collection of key concepts that appear throughout the text. On the center spread of the book (pp. 72-73), the LEXICON LINKMAP presents the entire collection at once, with each entry placed in the same position as it is on its originating page.
The overlapping pattern that results collapses the space and time created by the opacity of paper pages. In the supplement, the map moves, allowing the user to unravel the clusters and view the page number and definition
for each entry by clicking on the highlighted words.
The NOTES section does not attempt to reduce the distance between the web and the book, nor is it a viable research tool (printable components are provided for that purpose). Instead it provides an alternate mapping of the book’s contents in the form of a dense textual surface that when traversed, reveals glimpses of the book’s conceptual terrain. The entire set of footnotes are presented simultaneously along with the text to which they’re connected. Arrow-shaped handles open each footnote into a box, which when selected, becomes an entryway into the text.
The BIBLIOGRAPHY can be accessed according to filtered content categories that position the book’s external reference points within a variety of disciplines, genres, and media. The method of differentiation reworks the accepted distinctions, as when a single entry occupies multiple categories or when an established category turns up empty.
The INDEX allows the user both to search by keyword and to browse the book’s content sorted by distinctions such as “behaviors”, “knowledge practices”, or “literary criticism in print”.
The SOURCE MATERIAL section recreates pages 132-138 from the Writing Machines book, which show the sources from which cited “samples” are taken. In the Web Supplement, users can open and view reproductions of the
original sources in full color, at actual size.
The ERRATA screens show pages with editor’s marks indicating the corrections that never got made. The user can view and print revised replacement pages.
