Pelig (unless otherwise noted in the text support material) also concerns with music, sound, and rhythm in texts broadly defined but coherent for being un-/de-peopled to some extent. Instruments are played by people, so too are these productions populated, but, like instrumentals, proceed and succeed without the vocals, the lyrics, the narrative, pounds of plot, and pinpoint perspectivesa primary persona.

What may eventually become a self-supporting/standing now comprises pieces of, puzzles in, and/or parallel process—whatever partnership or parting, and eventually passed on, pulled out, pissed of, the works. Here those come together, pool their resoucrces, and find play to the people again. Perhaps just a place to put a pack of pretty phrases, perhaps a playground protected from public purview. Perhaps a plant producing pre-fab particulars. Probably a panacea of for panicked, previously pavement -pounding or pounded and particular. Purely practical for some, and probably a playground pan-pollinated for pitches, pleas, proposal, plans, partner, pairing, practice, pact forming and re-forming, personal, political, profitable, peculiear, preposterous, and always packed with potential and possibilties, perpetually in progress.

ARTRIDGE, a completely new entity, was once born under the name ARSENAL.

Members of ARTRIDGE have been involved in various bands and music projects over the years.
Explore new ways to produce and publish, to push on the process, the assumptions and traditions of promotins, publiicity, as well as production. Likewise, productive pairingsfrom unlikely partners and players heretofor played and implicated in the perpetrating of placatioin, and passive participation. Plan to purchase and proibited and proscribed, prepare to pissoff the public , to be the picked-on in a periodicals panning of yuour pet, protracted, priciple public proferring of improper politicing and spaning of public pitfalls.
MISSION
Operate independently as a predominantely instrumental outfit bridging the gaps between arranged classical score themes, post-industrial electro and environmentally pollutive soundscapism.
Collage and epic will be hallmarks of the production in possessed of most of its potential., the subject and process will inevitably be graniny, these two are also nothing if not a convluence of orgganic and electroprosthetic explansivon and enabled , thproduction being predestined to some degree by the toolbox , pioneering paths in process and product with your plucky prodding. And don’t forget the magnetism of adiction. the links in the scene. the overloaded new refiguring of “downloading” in this context now.
FOCUS
Blending audio collages of epic proportions with grainy electro-magnetic meshes and slicing guitars—enter our catalyst toolbox through the download link.
Far more than traditional writing and the author’s work hereto date, this is a visual piece, having taken at least as much gime tweaking pixels and phenesmes. But also collaborations, here on this work guided by me, or more pthe coming together of peers, that kind of team work would be a great enabler and experiment.

Part II: exciting ideas and future plans!

okay, the core-y nugget of this idea/vision is pretty cool, i think, and is what will make this thing work, if anything will, as I’ve wanted/envisioned it to.in fact, now that I’m thinking about it this way, i think it probably wouldn’t have been successful the way it was planned before with just straight chronological arrangement/presentation, with the most recent entry the one visitors land on (as 99%of all blogs function). That’s because what I think is interesting about this project/story, is a) some of the crazy, extreme hijinks and lows that are, someof them, well in the past, and all of them, unless a visitor comes the day after a spectacular backslidin’ relapse, in the past to some degree, and there for not available to make a first impression or any impression at all perhaps, buried, lost, not made most of, etc. and b) recovery in real time as it is figured out, and as the record itself is part of, instrument in that process, and recovery will only be compelling to strangers, and people coming in in middle, etc. as it relates to illness—recovering from what? how far have come? etc.—so, the now with the then together and in same view—which is what my idea is: To have home page display both most recent entry and a somewhat random archival entry. How, exactly this will be executed is still TBD. Will current be always restricted to only the last OFF post (advantage of higher contrast, but also a little different idea, making that side/window a thermoter of progress, marker of furthest gone, place getting back to if off, one end of spectrum)? Will other, historical doc, be one of selected greatest hits that cycle and recycle through, or picked from pool comprising most all entries but each quickly approved, or all of them 100%? Or up to certain number of days or weeks or months ago? Or, always exactly six months or year ago? Probably always from On blog, but could be differently interesting also if taken from both on & off—could see progress in recovery efforts, or trial and error, dfferent strategies, etc. Anyway, I think it’ll be really cool tohave two side by side like that. for variety, & comparison, & understanding, & entertainment reasons…

But it’ll be difficult given my slaved over precious design. All my extracurricular text snippets take up a shload of real estate, I know that, and yet/because of, I like it. Have though of some options. a) [as much as I truly detest splash pages,…][but this won’t exactly be a splash page, since the snippets do work and…] it may have snippets from both homepages combined, may have lots of links (TOC, Archives, individ. blogs, rss & that mumbo jumble, etc) and info, more about whole project and blog—how it works, multi-s the two, etc.—etc etc. so that home page is visually appealling but also full of information and access and is otherwise useful fororientation, etc. Then either a very prominent link to separate page dedicated to the two entries of the day (would non-current entry be same for all users all day? or always random every page hit? i think latter because easier, and more exposure for returning single user—another way to access info, not unlike SG’s random photo sampler show—and different ones across users so that they tell each other and then go look for each other’s, etc.) (and from their, as well as home page, links to linear, blog-specific entry archives) or page split between two entries belowthe fold (with lots of calling out of that location). or, the idea I’m leaning toward, though if I couldhave my cake and eat it too, i’d have all my snippets and design and info on home page AND two entries side by side. But that’s impossible so…next best (?) is one square window that scrolls and is tabbed at top to toggle between most recent and most random. So of course I’ve over talked this one again, but that’s the little gem, but it’s really imperfect that one or other text has to be chosen maybe I keep designs for homepages of each blog (because will have th eon and the off separate as are, and on combined blog for three total. So, two pages as are, one combined page without the frills, just the entries, some brief explanatory crap, simple—even better, with links to separate blogs. Yeah. that rules. I worked it out right here right now while writing about it, as I desparately and very naively hope to do with a crack smoking habit. heh Who am I kididng? We’ll see.

The combined multiblog will have combination/organization/presentation options and design elements to differentiate origins and types of posts, etc. very cool to be able to see togther as well as separate.

Okay, just have to do it and stop talking about it. Thing is, I’d love to just do it 24/7 until done or satisfied or burnt out, but with work full-time, it makes me just want to hire somebody to do it for me—but only because my energy and time are so disproportionate to the task, because ideally I do it all and love it, pour self into it. heart and soul and other cheese. feels like it will take forever to get migrated, designed, configured, imported, set-up, plug-insgoing, all features in place and functional, and all content in—man, that’s huge…

A recurring tendency no doubt noticable if not noticed: the reimagining the whole project in a new and exciting way. Usually the same project with a relatively minor tweak that seems, at least at the time, transformative. To be seen; I haven’t reviewed the entries myself and my memory wasn’t what it was, and it was never much. This is one of those, quite possibly same as a previous forgotten revisioning, possibly essentially exactly the same (can one use those e-words together like that? rob such grandiose liberties like (nutritious) candy from babes?), most probably a small-scale mod with relatively significant effects, especially content shifts by degrees triggering latitudinal by/or longitudinal recalibrations of magnitude in things like shaping, presentation, positioning…

At core it’s The Sprawl. One base diff: even sprawlier sprawl, more inclusive (exhaustive)(fic, po, art, nFic, found, help, etc.), stretched. Thus lent to One sig Diff: sheer quantity inside enough to fill 2-3 (more?) full-sized (?)(stan.) books and open up to severL natURol options for org strats. Driving algorithms for production of literature, lies, letters, or lists as well as collorlary and catalytic movement and intercourse to whatever degree employed (and engaged!), will be, of course, core mathematics, hard, but styled by/built around/informed by pure math, the theoretical, the codec of musicologies, prescribed by and descriptive of grammar, phenomenologically codifying, spandexiconically stretch with the tension of imperfectly functional linguistic morphology. E.G.wiz: combinatorial outcome of text’s tone and rhythm mapped formulaically to music (and then perhaps the music maped to complex emotional cocktail states and/or the music is assigned to/representative of basic, fitting/harmonizing (even if appropriately unpleasantly) activities: from learning, resting, and exploring to eating, masturbating, and fighting. Dreaming by numbers.


Or, far more simply (or complexly-complicatedly, really) and interestingly, the math is no more than a faithful conduit, a porter as innocent as can be (which isn’t totally), not acting on the text or being a bend or fork in the road, far less a mathemagician as conceived above for extreme (success, depth, a tunnel-mining of that vein, whatever). No, merely soley translator of raw undisciplined, unvisioned, purposed language into lit given one or more mappings, methods, and criteria. Have these operations link sequentially or even interactively with increasing input, variables, nuance and possibility and your verging back into alchemistic territory. The simple starts at taking the number of letters in each word, converting to it’s corresponging letter of the alphabet, pooling the letters somehow so the letters in the late teens and early twenties get a fair shake, too, and then lining them up in their original order and seeing what words come out. That Rudimentary kipling. To start at least. Build. See what those yield, and where they lead. It might surprise, and benefit person and project. The transmorphation bi-directional, or at least optional: lang to lit, lit to lang. Clang to clit, clit to clang. Relationship building. Steppy-step up, words keyed to other words by association direct, in-/re-verse, by (up to six) degrees based on meaning or maybe even more esoterically by predominate placement in mouth of pronunciation, even by harshness. Or combos and combinations thereof. Rhythm of whole passage/para—graphed, graded and grouped, then group members—membership defined at the sentence level, maybe?—swap places to see the difference, hear how it sounds, and get more feeling for sounds input in meaning-making. …it fractals toward infinte Jest. A letter triggers a word, v.v., and so on n on n on…trigger happy beaten dead horse…

In an extraction model (trigger larger than bullet hole), formation is selective, and in that way true to life in that much is wasted, missed, lost, flownby: sexy ops drunkenly stumbling by not taken advantage of, efforts are in vain, targets just missed, lady luck out cycling with the chancellor, looking for a lemonade stand to stop at, patronize… and the downward spirals of poverty in a swirling drainage of symmetry just as the upward mobility of affluence does itself every favor in bloom and burgeoning bounty.

Human in her action? Human interaction? Input? Felt? Non-verbally per haps? Personalities at play? Pre-programmed to be perplexed or progressive, or derived from the/a personality text, hot-swappable, a genome for the gnomes of (nascent) notion, a text printed in blue, a DNA text, a text compact and micronic, written in helix formally or visually/structurally, with text bits—genes, or cells if getting that granular doesn’t feel comfortable—for physical features, for talents, for weaknesses.


Or: doess the node gen. (erate) it’s own new text, construct it’s operative/functional self-hood the way we all dream? Time passing means accumulation, layering, stacking, building, acquiring, sedimentarily.
Or: does each second tick a strike at the foundation, chipping away tid bit by bit so that the reading is a witnessing of the slow, inevitable degradation of the original text (a defacing disfigurment that is also featuring to a smooth, unfaceted, uninteresting unbroken-in surface).
One, other, omni can be an organizing, a shaping (improvement, a revision, an edit), a creative creating of the text out of the raw material born with (letters, words, bits of disparate floating text) OAR concepts/objects/situations encountered, acquired, suffered, given and machinistically/wildly creatively programmatically parlayed into textual subs/linguistic reps/placeholders/labels/corrals to…wait for it…here it comes…

And, ohhh, a microwave not just recycled for its kitsch kache but retrofitted, no!, not just as housing (invitingly roomy though it may be) & circuit gutting, but its function preserved as integral to the identity (&funktion?poss?) (and therefor informing the tendency) of a nob.


A noir may inhabit an installation (en vitro in enviro) or as sculpture set or as piece displayed (‘hind glass [& key?]). Or toy. Or tool. Or tantric titty tassle. Or tallywhacker tongs. It (H/H) may function as a single producer, a mock-up of concept, a proto-performer, whatall, or (as obviously alluded to in open) machina ex deusInteractive 3.0 (hot machine on machine porn) or machine-human interacton. How intelligent? How brainwashed by The Agency, like a brother-on-law might be? How?

About the Book

Web Supplement: User’s Guide
Author Interview

An extension of the book, the Writing Machines Web Supplement began as a place to store, present, and rethink the scholarly apparatus. The site grew to include alternative mappings of the book’s conceptual terrain in a manner specific to the web?s any good technotext should—with additional functionalities unavailable in print. Completing the cycle of remediation, the Supplement gives the user the ability to customize his or her own copy of the book by providing Adobe Acrobat .pdf files for each section, some of which are formatted in “printer’s spreads” that can be printed out, folded, and inserted into the body of the book itself.

From “affordances” to “xml”, the LEXICON is a collection of key concepts that appear throughout the text. On the center spread of the book (pp. 72-73), the LEXICON LINKMAP presents the entire collection at once, with each entry placed in the same position as it is on its originating page.
The overlapping pattern that results collapses the space and time created by the opacity of paper pages. In the supplement, the map moves, allowing the user to unravel the clusters and view the page number and definition
for each entry by clicking on the highlighted words.


The NOTES section does not attempt to reduce the distance between the web and the book, nor is it a viable research tool (printable components are provided for that purpose). Instead it provides an alternate mapping of the book’s contents in the form of a dense textual surface that when traversed, reveals glimpses of the book’s conceptual terrain. The entire set of footnotes are presented simultaneously along with the text to which they’re connected. Arrow-shaped handles open each footnote into a box, which when selected, becomes an entryway into the text.

The BIBLIOGRAPHY can be accessed according to filtered content categories that position the book’s external reference points within a variety of disciplines, genres, and media. The method of differentiation reworks the accepted distinctions, as when a single entry occupies multiple categories or when an established category turns up empty.

The INDEX allows the user both to search by keyword and to browse the book’s content sorted by distinctions such as “behaviors”, “knowledge practices”, or “literary criticism in print”.

The SOURCE MATERIAL section recreates pages 132-138 from the Writing Machines book, which show the sources from which cited “samples” are taken. In the Web Supplement, users can open and view reproductions of the
original sources in full color, at actual size.

The ERRATA screens show pages with editor’s marks indicating the corrections that never got made. The user can view and print revised replacement pages.

Originally, to do was only for me, but thinking an esoteric mode/benefit in making it available for public view as well (only with both the others). some kind of trianguation. seeing three layers. seeing difficulty, seeing dealing with difficulty, seeing dealing with the dealing. three different activities at once but informing the others (i.e. when reader sees me deliberately constructing text, how does that affect reading, view, response, feelings, meaning, understanding.) obvious stupid shit.

I don’t understand the structure.
Many people come back to Ftrain over a course of months of years before the structure makes sense, and then, they tell me, it suddenly makes perfect sense. The structure is an essential part of the site. So if you like the writing, but are put off by the structure, know that other people have felt your pain, but that sticking with it might reward you. Might.

Ftrain is a hierarchy. Any given page has one or more of parent, children, and sibling pages, and every page lives somewhere in the hierarchy.

The front page is the very top node of the hierarchy, and everything branches out from there.

On the front page are all the pages flagged for release on this day, or, if there are none, the most recent piece written.

If you use Mozilla, a recent Netscape, or Opera the wonderful “Site Navigation Bar” feature will also allow you to quickly race around Ftrain’s hierarchy.

Ftrain is this complicated because it has over 1000 separate nodes, all of them connected to one another in some way, with something like 700,000 words between them, and all extensible. It was designed to make it possible to tell stories over time, so that a piece begun in one year could be resolved in the next, just like it happens in life, but with the added satisfaction of narrative completion.

I think the navigation is an okay, but imperfect compromise between the technical and the prosaic, and will continue to develop it.


What happened to Reader Services?
Reader Services was going to be a sort of mega-bookmarking tool for reading this site (and other sites with similar structures). The prototype worked okay, telling you what you’ve read, what you could read, and allowing you to keep and share notes on individual pages, but the system broke as the database ballooned to a ridiculous size. I am working a new version, but it needs to wait until I consolidate the system either around a Python/XSLT or Java/XSLT framework.

We’re looking for a designer and/or programmer to redesign our rapidly growing network and implement a CMS that ties it all together.
